Mangaluru. Under the supervision of the court, a big campaign is being conducted to demolish illegal buildings in Karnataka. These also include Illegal Religious Structures located on illegal land. Due to this campaign, three right-wing activists have threatened BJP leaders of the state. After this Mangaluru Police has arrested all three.
A day before the arrest, one of these right-wing activist Dharmendra Surathkal had also targeted the leaders in a press conference called by the Hindu Mahasabha to protest against this campaign. This press conference was called in protest against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Muzrai Minister Sasikala Jole. These people are protesting against the demolition of a temple in Nanjangud area in Mysuru on September 10. At the same time, Surathkal had threatened by making a controversial comment that ‘when we released Mahatma Gandhi and killed him to protect Hindus, do you think we will leave you people?’.
On Sunday, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that the three accused Surathakal, Rajesh Pavitran and Prem Polali were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Hindu Mahasabha state president LK Suvarna. Cases have been registered against all three under different sections.
The Karnataka government is following a 2010 Supreme Court order to remove all illegal structures built in public places after September 29, 2009. The implementation of the court order is being monitored by the Karnataka High Court. It is also being heard from time to time.
However, there has been a political uproar in the state regarding the demolition of Nanjangud temple. In this, many political and religious leaders have opposed the demolition of this temple. Former CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah questioned the commitment of the BJP towards Hindus and accused the state government of carrying out the demolition without consulting the local people. He says, ‘BJP government is responsible for this act against Hindu sentiments.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Pratap Simha claimed that only temples were being targeted. Hindu organizations have also protested against the BJP government in places like Mysuru and Mangaluru.
