Kolkata. Trinamool Congress has nominated Sushmita Dev as the Rajya Sabha candidate. Sushmita Dev left the Congress last month and joined the Trinamool Congress. Announcing her nomination for Rajya Sabha, TMC’s Twitter handle said, “Mamata Banerjee’s vision of empowering women and ensuring their maximum participation in politics will help society achieve more.”
Dev has been made the candidate for a Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant after the resignation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Manas Ranjan Bhuyan from West Bengal. Bhuyan, a minister in the Bengal government, had resigned from the post of Rajya Sabha member after being elected MLA from Sabang seat in Paschim Medinipur district in the assembly elections held in March-April this year. After registering victory for the third time in a row, Bhuyan has been made a minister in the Mamta government. TMC’s victory in this seat is considered certain, although any such speculations can be made only after the announcement of the BJP candidate. Elections will be held on this seat on October 4 and the results will also be declared on the same day.
Dev engaged in strengthening the party’s roots in Tripura
Dev is currently working to strengthen the party’s roots in Tripura. Dev’s father has been an MP from Tripura, so he has a lot of knowledge about there, which TMC wants to take advantage of. Along with this, TMC also wants to take advantage of Dev’s parliamentary and organizational experience.
Before joining TMC, Sushmita Dev, who was a Lok Sabha member from Silchar in Assam, was the President of All India Mahila Congress. Sushmita Dev’s father Santosh Mohan Dev was a senior Congress leader and was also a minister at the Centre.
After joining the Trinamool Congress, Sushmita had said that she had joined the TMC “unconditionally” and that whatever responsibility the party president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gives her, she will handle it.
