New Delhi. Jeep has officially launched the Commander, a 3-row SUV based on the Compass, in the South American markets. The Jeep Commander is completely built at the carmaker’s Pernambuco facility in Brazil and is based on the same platform used for the Compass, Renegade and other Jeep models. Jeep Commander SUV will also knock in India soon. However, the carmaker has not shared any timeline.
But it is likely to be launched sometime next year. When launched in India, the Jeep Commander SUV is likely to be called the Meridian. It can compete with the upcoming Volkswagen Tiguan, MG Gloster and other SUVs. For the South American markets, Jeep is offering the Commander SUV in two trims namely Limited and Overland. While the Limited variant gets a 4X2 wheel drive system, the Overland trim gets a 4X4 mode.

The Jeep Commander SUV is much bigger in size than the Compass SUV. The exterior of the Commander SUV gets the Jeep’s highly lit design, which includes a 7-slat grille on either side flanked by full-LED headlamps. There are trapezoidal wheel arches on the sides, along with a much straighter sideline than the Compass. For the South American markets, the Commander SUV is offered with standard 18-inch wheels. It can be upgraded to 19-inch wheels in the overland variant.

The interior of the Commander is also very similar to that of the Compass SUV. It gets a 10.1-inch full HD wide touchscreen infotainment system and an even bigger 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster. It includes 9 Harman Kardon speakers with a capacity of 450 watts. Its overland variant comes with Alexa Virtual Assistance. The Jeep Commander has a huge boot space which at least holds a capacity of 233 liters with all the 7 seats on it.

Engine of Jeep Commander
Jeep is offering the Commander SUV with two engine options. Both the Limited and Overland variants are powered by a 1.3-litre Turbo Firefly petrol engine that can generate 185 hp of power and 270 Nm of peak torque. This is the same engine that has been used in the Compass in the past as well. The overland 4X4 variant will also get the famous 2.0 Multijet turbo diesel engine, which can deliver power of up to 170 hp and peak torque of 380 Nm.
There are two transmission options, the first is a 6-speed automatic for the front-wheel drive variants and the second is for the 9-geared, diesel-powered options. Talking about the safety features, this SUV has 7 air bags and semi-autonomous advanced driver assistance system. The list includes adaptive cruise control, automatic braking in case of a collision, blind spots, cross traffic detectors, shift alert lanes, emergency braking for pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists, fatigue detectors, license plate recognition, automatic high beam and park. Assist is included. Jeep Commander SUV price starts from around Rs 28.23 Lakh.
