Iron Supplement : In the name of accelerating the physical and mental development of children, there are many types of food supplements available in the market these days. People are also using them a lot by relying on its attractive advertisements and claims that give instant benefits. But in a study conducted in rural areas of Bangladesh, it has been revealed that iron supplementation is helpful in removing anemia in young children, but it has no effect on their development and mental ability or behavior. Let us tell you that for the prevention of anemia (anemia) in children, iron supplementation is given worldwide under global guidelines.
According to the news published in Dainik Jagran, this study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine on 9 September. Under this study, the effect of iron supplementation on children’s mental ability or behavior and development has been assessed.

Researchers from Australia’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) and Bangladesh’s International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research provided iron drops and home fortification packets to 3,300 8-month-old babies. They found that both of these measures worked well for children. There was no effect in development, although the condition of anemia did improve. Researchers analyzed the children’s mental (cognitive) and neural development as well as their growth (height and weight). They found that iron supplementation had no effect on these activities.
Can become the basis of global nutrition policy
WEHI Associate Professor St. Ryan Pasricha says that his study can make a big difference in global nutrition policy making. He said, we have been giving iron supplements to young children around the world for decades, believing that it has a positive effect on their development. But there is no proof that it is really beneficial in development. We have shown in our study that iron supplementation improves anemia in children, but it has no effect on children’s cognitive activities and behavior or development. It was also investigated whether there were any side effects of iron supplementation.

Some children were more harmed
The report further reads, Jena Hamdani of the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research said that in some children, iron supplementation has caused more harm than benefit. He told that the children who did not have anemia and were given iron supplements, then became more ill and had to be taken to the doctor again and again due to diarrhea. This was probably due to the iron supplementation and thus the supplement did more harm than good.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends iron supplements for all children in low- or middle-income countries where anemia is common, but says WEHI’s Ryan Pasricha Pasricha, who needs such supplements based on this study. There is a need to carefully reconsider giving.
