Jakarta. Indonesia’s anti-corruption court on Monday sentenced the former cabinet minister to 12 years in prison. The minister is accused of bribery and fraud in helping the coronavirus epidemic in the country by the government. Former social affairs minister Juliari Peter Batubara was arrested in December.
Earlier, former minister Batubara had faced allegations of bribery in the government’s Kovid-19 aid distribution process at the Anti-Corruption Authority. He also went to the headquarters of the Commission for the Elimination of Corruption. He is accused of receiving $1.2 million from two supplier companies through two subordinates. The Anti-Corruption Commission had seized a huge amount of cash in the case which was kept in seven suitcases, three bags and envelopes. Soon after, the minister was deposed by President Joko Widodo.

Batubara is the second cabinet minister to be found guilty in the corruption case within two weeks of December, before Maritime and Fisheries Minister Edhi Prabovo was found guilty of taking a bribe in the lobster export case. He allegedly used this money during luxury shopping in America, although he resigned soon after. Such cases are tarnishing the image of the Indonesian president, who was sentenced to five years in prison last month. Let us tell you that President Widodo is running a campaign to end corruption. Two other cabinet ministers have been sentenced to imprisonment. Both of them have also been found guilty in the corruption case itself.
