Johannesburg. Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been admitted to a hospital near the Estcourt Correctional Center (Prison). The government made this announcement on Friday.
Zuma is serving a 15-month prison sentence for defying a Constitutional Court order to testify in a state-backed investigation investigating corruption allegations during his presidency from 2009 to 2018.
According to a statement issued by the Prison Services Department, regular investigation revealed that Zuma needs to be admitted to the hospital.
“As a former president, Zuma’s health needs must include the South African Military Health Service,” the statement said. This is being followed since he was kept at the Estcourt Correctional Centre.
After Zuma’s prison sentence last month, violent riots erupted in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, which soon turned into massive looting of shopping centers and burning of trucks in KwaZulu-Natal. More than 330 people were killed in the riots and property worth $1.36 billion was damaged. (agency input)
