New Delhi. The Center has told the Supreme Court that it has made 84 appointments in the years 2020 and 2021 in six tribunals, including the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). No recommendations of the Search cum Selection Committee are currently pending. The Center has given this information in an affidavit filed on September 14. The Centre’s statement assumes significance as the apex court on Wednesday expressed displeasure over non-filling of vacant posts in tribunals and the appointment of “select people” after being told about it.
A special bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana asked the Center to fill up the posts in the next two weeks. The bench said that till then it is keeping the petitions related to filling up of vacant posts and contempt. The affidavit filed through the Director of Revenue said that the Central Government has till date acted upon all the recommendations of the Search-cum-Selection Committee and the appointment orders have been issued.
The Center gave information about the appointments made in Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, National Company Law Tribunal, Telecom Disputes and Settlement Appellate Tribunal, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), Electricity Appellate Tribunal (APTEL) and Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT).
According to the affidavit, “a total of 84 appointments have been made in various tribunals during the year 2020 and 2021”.
