Patna. There is a lot of discussion in the political corridors of Bihar these days to change the name of Bakhtiyarpur station. Two years ago also, BJP MP Gopal Narayan Singh raised the demand to change the name of Bakhtiyarpur station in Rajya Sabha. At the same time, the local people of Bakhtiyarpur have also said that naming Bakhtiyarpur station after the Bakhtiyar Khilji who destroyed Nalanda University hurts them. But, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s opinion is different from these people.
Today, when media persons questioned Nitish Kumar about changing the name of Bakhtiyarpur, he clearly said that why will the name of Bakhtiyarpur be changed? All this is meaningless. On the question of changing the name, Nitish Kumar at first said with a bit of annoyance that the demand to change the name of Bakhtiyarpur is futile. Then he smiled and told that my birthplace is Bakhtiyarpur. This time a person from here has started building Nalanda University anew. Why will we change the name of Bakhtiyarpur? People are talking about this place without any meaning. Hence the name will not be changed.
Why is the demand to change the name rising?
The demand to change the name of Bakhtiyarpur once again in Bihar is not new. Two years ago, when MP Gopal Narayan Singh raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha, the issue started gaining more strength. Then Gopal Narayan Singh had said in the House that Bakhtiyar Khilji had destroyed the Nalanda University. To name a station after him is to glorify him. BJP MLA Mithilesh Kumar has also demanded Nitish Kumar to change the name of Bakhtiyarpur. Local people have also been writing letters to the state government and the central government demanding change of name. People of Bakhtiyarpur tell that Bakhtiyarpur Khilji looted our country, named our cultural heritage to be destroyed, it is wrong to name the station after such a cruel person.
