Guwahati. On Thursday’s ruckus in Sipjhar, Assam, Chief Minister Himanta B Sarma said that you cannot humiliate the state government with a video. The area has been known for murders since 1983. Otherwise people generally do not occupy the temple land, I have seen encroachment all around. CM B Sarma said that a peaceful eviction drive was agreed in that area, but the question arises who instigated the people?
To a question whether the drive to remove encroachment in Sipajhar would still continue, Sarma said that we have to continue it. We cannot allot 30-40 acres of land without Aadhaar, where will the rest go? But yes, I will talk to him once again about this. The Chief Minister further said that it is not important to involve the police in the work of eviction of people from one place, talks also help.
Discussions being held for 4 months
Talking to news agency ANI, Chief Minister Sarma said that discussions were being held for this campaign for four months. A Congress delegation had met me regarding this and agreed to allot land to people who do not have any land. We have to make productive use of 27 thousand acres of land. The Chief Minister further said that there was a temple there but that too was encroached upon.
In fact, on Thursday, the police, who went to remove the encroachment in the district, had a clash with the local people, in which these people died in police firing. About two dozen people have also been injured in this incident. In the footage of the violence, a man is hitting a camera while hitting a motionless person. The perpetrator was identified as Bijay Shankar Bania, a professional photographer who was hired by the district administration to document the situation.
Bania was arrested. The state government announced a judicial inquiry into the circumstances of the incident amid rising public anger. An order issued by Home and Political Department Secretary Devprasad Mishra said that the government has decided that the inquiry will be conducted by a retired judge of the Gauhati High Court.
What is the whole matter?
According to the video going viral on social media, a villager is seen running towards the police with sticks. After this, many guns and sticks of the police are drawn towards him. As soon as a bullet is fired, the villager falls down and then many policemen throw sticks at the person and make him half dead. Even after this, many policemen keep on raining sticks on the injured person. Amidst these guards of the law, the cameraman moves forward and jumps on the chest of the unconscious man on the ground, presses his neck with his knee and punches him.
Despite all this, the law-guarding police just ask him to leave. When this act of Assam Police came out through a viral video, it became difficult to answer. Later, the attacking cameraman Bijoy Bonia was arrested. A CID inquiry has been ordered into this incident.
