It is maintaining its historicity and grandeur till date. Allahabad University, known as Oxford of the East, is one of the four oldest universities in India. This central university is a witness to the chains of slavery, the struggle for freedom, the changing and evolving India.

The foundation of the university lay like this
During the British rule, there was no center of education in the whole of North India. The affiliation of the educational institutions was with the University of Kolkata. Then in 1866 Muir College was established in Allahabad which later developed as Allahabad University. Its foundation stone was laid on 9 December 1873. It was formally inaugurated on 8 April 1886 by the Viceroy Lord Dufferin. Its map was made by the famous English architect Emerson. It is the fourth oldest in the country after the University of Calcutta (Kolkata), Bombay (Mumbai), Madras, established during the period of India. It got the status of Central University in 2005.

Allahabad University has always been popular among the people due to its architecture and architecture. Its decades old building is an excellent example of the architecture of the time. Its historic and grand buildings are built in different styles. With domes, pillars and arches, this university is not only a tourist attraction for the students but also for the common people. Be a poet like Firaq Gorakhpuri. Also in the field of politics, it has been the first school of many successful politicians. Leaders like President Shankar Dayal Sharma, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar Rao, VP Singh took the first step in politics from this. All these people are inspiration for today’s generation. This is the proof of all the achievements of the university which is continuously taking that university forward.
